Prolific is just one chip manufacturer, there's also FTDI, Silabs,
and others. They all work more or less the same.

I've been using a no-name converter based on the Prolific PL-2303,
and it's output levels are acceptable for RS232 (-9V 0V +10V). For
the general purpose of for example digital Fluke ScopeMeter and
Magellan Meridian GPS communications it has been working very well,
no problems whatsoever :-)

As my Tablet too has (obviously) no built-in serial RS232 port, I've
set the USB-converter to a fixed "COM2". Some Bluetooth devices
usually tend to invent a new COM port each time they are connected,
but with USB-serial-converter I haven't yet come accross that problem.

These things are pretty cheap, on eBay they seem to go for around
$10. Not much of an investment, IMHO.

Hope this helps!

I've used an ebay one for my garmin gpsIII, and it works fine... it's
figuring out how to use it is a pain. Plug it in, open the "driver" program,
hope its detected properly, initialize it, then open Delorme, and hope
you've got everything set. It takes a while to understand what you need to
do with the "software".

Why dont they make gps cheaper and with USB standard???

My GPS was relatively cheap as part of the Maps & Streets with GPS and is
USB. I did end up buying a cradle for it to use with compact flash on my
pocket pc but for the tablet or my husband's laptop USB is how it is
connected.

or any of a number of other places, that was just the first one that showed
up on Google ($80)

On a recent visit to Seattle there were a few people on the bus who were
giving directions to the (lost) bus driver using the GPS and mapping
software installed on their machines.

Funny thing is that the Pharos GPS that comes with Streets and Trips is a
serial GPS. The serial to USB converter is in the cable. Try plugging in
the cable alone and see if it doesn't detect the serial adapter. :)

A few people? They all had laptops? or tablets?
I'm sure everyone said something different too... "Mine says take Main!",
"Mine says take Grand!"... the bus driver must've been going nuts.
But alot of GPS devices have mapping software installed on them too...
I want a phone with GPS... that'd be cool. Also, I'm not a person who's
worried that the gov't, or big business is watching my every move.
I've been listening to Coast to Coast AM and one of their talk guy's is
going all nuts, on "RF-ID tags" like big buisness is can track where you
live via these tags... its moronic!

The serial-to-USB cable does work on TabletPC but you may need to download
the newest driver from manufacture's web site. I use a GPS with USB
interface but infact it use a serial-to-USB converter in its cable. The
converter use the Prolific PL-2303 chip. The only problem is that I must
un-plug the USB GPS before I suspend my TC1000 TabletPC otherwise the TC1000
can not resume.

I just tested the new driver from the Prolific web site. It works fine with
suspend and resume.

You know, that annoys me so much.

A typical use of a tablet, laptop, or hand-held is for field service,
and there are huge quantities of devices out there using RS232 or 485
to communicate and needing a proper serial port for monitoring or
programming.

The mindless removal of a perfectly good interface is very very silly.

Not everyone had a tablet, laptop or even a pocket pc. I know over half the
FP MVPs did not carry any of the above with them on the bus.

I of course had my tablet. Now happily recovered from its encounter with a
diet coke.<g>
